Water filters, life vests, heating pads: what non-obvious needs of the Ukrainian defenders are covered by Oleg Krot and the Techiia Foundation

Tech entrepreneur Oleg Krot and the public organization “Techiia Foundation”  have spent several hundred thousand dollars in recent months on unobvious aid for defenders and victims of russian aggression. It’s just a tiny part of the more than $60 million they have turned into support for Ukraine since February 24, 2022.

Water filters or life jackets are rarely newsworthy. These items aren’t as important as body armor, helmets, quality boots, or medical supplies. And yet, small things matter. When and under what conditions — we will discuss further.

1. Falling into the water without consciousness

The naval forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine perform tasks on water and land. When a ship gets under shelling, a soldier can fall into the water due to the blast wave. In such situations, people often lose consciousness or get concussions, which can cause them to drown. To avoid fatal consequences, the Techiia Foundation handed over German-made AWN Supralite 150H lifejackets to the military. They are lightweight, reliable, and comfortable. They fasten quickly, do not come undone, and have a signal whistle and light-reflecting elements.

2. Decrease in air temperature

Ukrainian volunteers took care of winter uniforms in advance because, with the onset of cold weather, the air temperature in the country drops to minus 15, and sometimes even 20 degrees Celsius. Under such conditions, people need particular accessories that would, for example, warm their hands and feet while on duty at positions or in reconnaissance operations.

Last summer, Oleg Krot and the Techiia Foundation purchased chemical heating pads which start working upon interaction with air and warm hands and feet for up to 12 hours, having a thin structure so as not to interfere with clothing but give off heat.

German Thermopad heating pads have the shape of regular shoe insoles. For hands — a specific convenient shape.

3. Lack of electricity sources

Damaged infrastructure and being in the fields and woods may not interfere with performing combat tasks and planning missions. For this, among other things, the soldiers need an uninterrupted power supply. A reliable generator is required where they coordinate operations and even banally charge phones. Techiia Foundation donated 20 German Konner & Sohnen with a capacity of 7.5 kW for one of the brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

4. Destroyed infrastructure

After being pushed out of the temporarily occupied territories, the russian invaders destroy or significantly damage infrastructure. While the people on the liberated territory are waiting for the complex repair of utility lines, they constantly need drinking water. They need filters to purify water from reservoirs, snow, or rain for drinking.

Despite the destruction, it is always difficult for the military to find clean water in positions. So they need filters too. These must be convenient for transportation and have a significant capacity.

Oleh Krot, together with the Techiia Foundation, purchased American Sawyer filters. They weigh 57 grams, have a capacity of 300,000 liters, and retain entities down to 0.1 micron. A thousand of these are already serving the military, and 400 Ukrainians in the liberated territories.

“From the first days of the war, we have been taking care of the military and civilians, volunteers, and vulnerable segments of the population,” Oleg Krot comments on the purchases. – We work with reliable suppliers and optimize logistics all the time. Unfortunately, war means no waiting around. Our people need to get help quickly. Any little thing that can save a life or improve the conditions for performing tasks — everything matters.”

During the whole period of russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the Techiia Foundation NGO provided humanitarian aid to the defenders of Ukraine for more than $21.5 million. These include vehicles, UAVs, military clothing with accessories, and much more. Moreover, Oleg Krot, director of the Techiia Foundation, purchased almost $40 million worth of military essentials.

The Techiia Foundation is part of the TECHIIA international technology holding, which Oleg Krot and Yuriy Lazebnikov founded. The non-governmental organization has been implementing social projects for several years, in particular, updating equipment in regional medical centers in Ukraine as part of the programme to combat childhood cancer.
