What makes live casino games different from other online casino games?

There are an increasing number of different online casino games available for players to choose from. Between the hundreds of varieties of slot games to variations on classic table games like Roulette and Blackjack, the casino industry has grown a lot online.

One of the more recent evolutions of the online casino game is something known as the live casino game. These are distinct from other online casino games thanks to the presence of a live dealer, rather than the game software acting in the role.

So, let’s take a look at all the factors that make live casino games different.

Live dealers vs random number generators

The biggest difference between live casino games and others is the form of the dealer. In live casino games a dealer or croupier will run the game from a studio, being live-streamed to online players. This immediately sets them apart from other online casino games.

Live dealers use physical game components at the table, such as playing cards, dice or the Roulette wheel. This allows for random chance through physical forces such as friction or through the shuffling of the physical deck of cards (usually carried out by a dedicated shuffling machine).

Other online casino games are driven by computer algorithms known as random number generators (RNGs). These allow for randomness through the generation of strings of thousands of numbers in any given second, with each number corresponding to a playing card face, symbol on the slot reels or pocket on the Roulette wheel.

When a game action is initiated – whether that’s a slot game spin or the drawing of a playing card – the current set of numbers produced by the RNG is locked in. This then determines the outcome of the action, making it impossible for anyone to predict.

Live casino games also use measures to ensure that their outcomes are truly random and unpredictable, with cameras capturing various angles of the table and game components.

Game pacing

With a live dealer, the overall pace of the casino game naturally changes. In live Roulette or Blackjack games, there are set time limits for phases, with players only having a set interval to decide on their wager or other actions.

This ensures that the game runs at a consistent and steady pace, removing the potential for delays. The set pace of live casino games also means that players may join the table when a game is already underway, having to wait for their turn to play.

Digital online casino games do not have the same pacing, as players are able to move the game along at their own pace. Without the presence of the live dealer or other players, there is less need for phases of the game to be tied to a timer.

While game animations play out in other online casino games, these may move at a faster speed than a live dealer, each of which may suit different player preferences.

The live dealer and use of physical game components are the main factor that differentiates live casino games from others. But there are factors like pacing that vary between live and other online casino games, as well as the technology required to live-stream the dealer in real time.
