Moving and Shaking the World’s Biggest Industries

Follow Us:

In recent years, and especially since 2020, some of the world’s leading companies have made interesting moves to new countries for a myriad of reasons. Companies that traditionally have had bases in Ireland, the UK, or even the US have tried to find ways to increase profitability while cutting costs. This has meant pursuing different tactics in an effort to maintain competitiveness. In this article, we’ll take a look at a few industries and the moves that companies have taken in opening new locations.

iGaming

The global iGaming sector is said to be worth over £500 billion and growing. Because of this, companies in the sector are looking at ways to grow in the industry. Take the example of Paddy Power, one of the largest players in the online gaming industry. They offer gamers the chance to play bingo games such as Deal or No Deal, which give users the chance to bet on themed bingo games. While also offering a suite of other products like slots and jackpots, as well as in-game sports betting. In recent weeks, the company announced plans to create jobs in the US in the operational sector of its business, increasing its focus on US-backed strategy.

Across the globe in India, Ernst and Young have reported that due to massive growth in the domestic iGaming industry, over 250,000 jobs will be created there by the end of 2025. Gambling revenue in the country still only sits at 1% of the global tally; however, it is experiencing strong growth of over 20% per year, meaning that the future seems bright, and we can expect to attract big players into the market.

Pharmaceutical

There are countless pharmaceutical companies based in the UK and Ireland, and this number seems to fluctuate. In the past five years, companies such as Novartis have announced closures and cutbacks in Ireland; however, there has also been significant investment in the sector, even since the beginning of 2024. Almac has settled on plans to create over five hundred positions in the UK, while Japanese firm Astellas has also invested in jobs in the south-west of Kerry. These companies join giants like AstraZeneca and Pfizer, which already operate on the British Isles.

E-Commerce

Amazon is the largest player in this market, and as such, news of their new fulfillment centers is always greeted with a lot of noise, especially in the country in which they are opening. In the past year, they partnered with Bleckmann, a Dutch logistics company, to open a center in the Netherlands with the aim of improving deliveries in the country. One of Amazon’s main competitors, eBay, has a center in Ireland, and Amazon joined them on the island last year with plans to launch its own Ireland-specific website in 2024. In early 2023, the Chinese company owner of rapidly growing Temu moved its headquarters from China to Dublin.

The business world is rapidly changing across all industries while companies try their best to keep up with competition. This can mean companies open new offices, branches, or even move their headquarters, depending on current trends.
