Formation of the Pentagon Group
The Department of Defense has recently announced the formation of the new Pentagon Group to investigate unidentified aerial phenomena. The group has been named the ‘Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group’ and will be responsible to assess and mitigate any associated threats to the safety of flight and national security. It will be formed in collaboration with the intelligence community.
Its operations will be managed and supervised by an executive council made up of the undersecretary of defense for intelligence, the director of the Joint Staff, and senior officials from the office of the director of National Intelligence. The pentagon group will be created by Ronald Moultrie–the undersecretary of Defense for intelligence and security, under the guidance of Deputy Defense Secretary (Kathleen Hicks) and the Director of National Intelligence (Avril Haines).
Identifying Potential Threats
The Pentagon Group will be focusing on special-use airspace including military operations areas, firing ranges, and places restricted for national security. It will coordinate efforts within the Department of Defense, the services, and other agencies to minimize flight safety risks and other threats. As stated by Hicks, “Unidentified aerial phenomena in special-use areas represented a potential safety issue for military pilots and raised potential national security concerns”. It will be responsible for the investigation of UFO sightings in restricted airspace with the intent to mitigate flying objects that could threaten flight safety and national security. The US Department of Defense is an executive branch department of the federal government that is responsible for providing the military forces along with coordinating and supervising agencies and functions of the government and protecting the national security.
